Firefly watching in Abatan River has been a famous attraction in Bohol. It started out in 2008 as an initiative by the Abatan River Development Management Council. The objective of the group is to boost not only the tourist spots in the area but also to generate jobs and income to the entire province. But according to our guide, the fireflies has been there for a very long time.
The place is way too far if you are from Alona beach that it
takes around an hour on a one-way trip to get there. The road is too dark that
you will wish not to get stranded somewhere on your way.
Tour starts at around 6:00 PM and the fee is about 2000
pesos. That includes the tour guide and the boat. The tour runs for about 30 to 45 minutes and all you can see are fireflies above the trees.
The area is filled with mangrove trees and these little
creatures fed themselves from mangrove flowers. As per our guide, the fireflies
tend to transfer from one tree to another after consuming all its flowers. The
tour only covers three mangrove trees but the fireflies can be seen in another
trees way up the river.
They also offer kayaking in the river along with the firefly
watching.
