Safety is our topmost priority at home and to all our loved ones. Being ready for any circumstances is also a great chance of survival.
A recent Typhoon Lan has smashed through Japan and killing at least four people and leaving a trail of destruction behind. Though the typhoon had weakened to a Category 2 storm by the time it made landfall early on Monday (October 23, 2017), it even set off landslides and flooding that prompted flight cancellations and mass evacuation orders for tens of thousand of people.
But how are we going to prepare ourselves for this kind of scenario? Did you even bother assessing yourself or your home if you are ready to survive for any of this natural disasters?
If not, then you might consider preparing these items below:
- Water - One gallon per person, per day. Good for 3-day supply on evacuation and 2-week supply for home.
- Food - Non-Perishable, easy-to-prepare items. Good for 3-day supply on evacuation and 2-week supply for home.
- Flashlight - There are a lot of LED flashlights available today which is good for long use due to its low battery consumption and even an optional solar charging is available.
- Battery-Powered Radio - This is essential to get news and updates.
- Extra Batteries - A must have for your radio or flashlight if you ran out of power.
- First Aid Kit - Most common items such as plasters, gauze dressings, bandages, safety pins, surgical gloves and masks, tweezers, scissors, alcohol-free cleansing wipes, sticky tape, thermometer, skin rash cream, insect repellent, painkillers(such as paracetamol, aspirin, ibuprofen), cough medicine, antihistamine tablet, eye wash and bath, distilled water for cleaning wounds.
- Medications - Good for 7 day supply
- Multi-purpose Tool - Choose what best suits your needs. Most items available online are identical.
- Sanitation and Personal Hygiene Items - Being hygienic all the time, despite of your current situation is a good practice to maintain good health.
- Copies of Personal Documents - This is very important especially if you are advised to move to an evacuation area. Documents such as Medication List and Medical Information, Proof of Address, Passport, Birth Certificates, and any relevant documents must be carried out with you.
- Cellular Phone with Charger - This is also a must have item as it will be your first source of contact.
- Family and Emergency Contact Information - You might consider having it as a tag to all the members of your family in case they will be lost in transit if you were moved to an evacuation centers.
- Extra Cash - If still available, you might as well consider bringing some cash with you.
- Blanket or Sleeping Bag - In an evacuation area, not all stuff are provided. Bringing a blanket or sleeping bag will be helpful for you and your family.
- Maps of your area - Considering that you are familiar with your surroundings and the area where you live, a map might still help you get coordinates as fast as you could if you are moving by yourself to the nearest evacuation center.
- Whistle - Most of us know the importance of having a whistle with you. Having it on your survival kit will be a good idea.
- Matches or Fire Starters - It is a very important item to have on your kit.
- Rain Gears - Keeping your survival kit dry will help you survive for a period of time.
- Extra Clothes - Depends on the size of your Survival Kit bag, but this is also a must have item.
- Pocket Knife - Though most multi-tools already has a small knife on it, consider bringing a 3-inch foldable pocket knife with you.
- Tent - Evacuation centers don't usually have this so you might as well bring your own tent.
Bad things do happen in the world like war, natural disasters, disease. But if you and your family are ready and prepared, you will still have a great chance of survival.
And if you were advised by the authorities to leave your home and go to safety, please do not hesitate and do as they say. It is for your safety, not them.
